Im Verlauf ihrer nunmehr 25 Jahre andauernden Rebellion haben sie beachtliche Strukturen in den Bereichen Bildung, Gesundheit, Rechtsprechung, Wirtschaft, Medien und Selbstverwaltung aufgebaut. Entgegen aller Hindernisse durch die offizielle mexikanische Politik arbeiten die Aufständischen unermüdlich an der Konstruktion einer guten Regierung und einer gerechteren Gesellschaft. So ist es gelungen, eine solidarische Handelsbeziehung aufzubauen, die weit über die Standards des fairen Handels hinausgeht.
